Susan Granger’s DVD UPDATE for week of Fri., Sept. 16:
As an environmental catastrophe threatens the world, the smartly satirical “Son of Morning” celebrates a stressed-out copywriter (Joseph Cross) who experiences an episode of stigmata in church and is positioned as the next Messiah by an ambitious reporter (Heather Graham).
Set in the seemingly bucolic town of Prophet Hills, “Born of Earth” is a blood-curdling creature-feature, starring Daniel Baldwin, James Russo and Brad Dourif.
Before London-born hairdresser Vidal Sassoon emerged in the swinging ‘60s, fashionable women had big hair and were sleeping in rollers. As chronicled in Craig Teper’s rags-to-riches documentary “Vidal Sassoon: The Movie,” he revolutionized that “shagadelically” – with a pair of scissors and a five-point cut.
Narrated by Annette Bening, “Yogawoman” is the first film to focus solely on the impact of yoga on women’s health, fitness, emotional well-being and personal growth, showing how yoga has come out of the studio and into the real world, including cancer clinics, urban streets, prisons and African villages.
On its 70th anniversary, there’s the Blu-ray “Citizen Kane: Ultimate Collector’s Edition” with more than three hours of bonus content, including features like “Battle over Citizen Kane” and “RKO 281” and new commentaries by Peter Bogdanovich and Roger Ebert.
If you missed any episodes, there’s “Grey’s Anatomy: The Complete Seventh Season,” “Private Practice: The Complete Fourth Season” and “Sanctuary: The Third Season,” all packaged with extras like deleted scenes and blooper reels.
Recommended for family viewing: “The Dog Who Saved Halloween” brings back the beloved Labrador Retriever Zeus (voiced by Joey Lawrence) in a spooky, paw-fect adventure.
For preschoolers, “Wubbzy and the Fire Engine” heralds National Fire Prevention Week and “Barney: Big World Adventure – The Movie” accompanies the big purple dinosaur and his friends on a balloon ride around the world.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Cleverly directed by Kenneth Branagh, “Thor” is an adventurous, engrossing comic-book origin saga, focusing on how the arrogant, young Norse god Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was banished by Odin (Anthony Hopkins) to live among humans in order to learn how to harness his anger and develop humility.
