DVD Update for week of July 8

Susan Granger’s DVD UPDATE for week of Fri., July 8:

Set in a haunted house, “Insidious” is a deja-boo, filled with startling sounds and ominously opening doors, as Rose Byrne and Josh Wilson play parents whose son lapses into what seems like a coma until a clairvoyant convinces them it’s astral projection and demonic possession.

If that’s not enough terror, try “Wake Wood,” a supernatural shocker, set in Ireland, about grief-stricken parents who try to bring their nine year-old daughter back from the dead. And Owe Boll’s “Bloodrayne: The Third Reich – unrated Director’s Cut” is the third in the notorious series, based on the popular half-human/half-vampire video game character.

In “Erasing David,” British actor/filmmaker David Bond goes on the lam to see if he can disappear, only to find that surveillance on the global information trail never goes cold.

Like “Machete,” “Hobo With a Shotgun” is an expansion of one of the fake trailers embedded in “Grindhouse,” with Rutger Hauer as a homeless Canadian vigilante with a soft spot for a hooker (Molly Dunsworth).

“Sesame Street” imitates the bright lights of Hollywood in “The Best of Sesame Street Spoofs: V1 & V2,” appealing to parents/caregivers as well as young children with “True Mud,” an amusing parody of “True Blood,” and “A’s Anatomy,” taken from “Grey’s Anatomy,” among others.

Foreign film aficionados: in French, Olivier Masset-Depasse’s “Illegal” captures the heartache of a former teacher from Russia (Anne Coesens) who is detained by immigration authorities in Belgium and separated from her 14 year-old son, who manages to evade their grasp. And, in French and Arabic, Xavier Beauvois’s “Of Gods and Men” is based on true events – the 1996 kidnapping /murder in Algeria of seven French monks by Islamic terrorists.

PICK OF THE WEEK:  “America: the Story of Us,” reveals untold stories about the men and women who pushed innovation and ingenuity to create our modern world. Within its six discs, there are dramatic, historical re-creations with insights from Buzz Aldrin, David Baldacci, Louis Gates Jr., Brian Williams, Donald Trump, Michael Douglas, Generals Colin Powell, Tommy Franks and David H. Patraeus, among others.
